Saint Peter's is the "first church of jazz" due to its long and continuing welcome to jazz musicians and lovers of jazz. The ministry started in 1964 is today under the direction of bassist Ike Sturm, a leading composer of jazz sacred works.

The centerpiece of Saint Peter's jazz ministry is our Sunday, 6 p.m. Jazz Vespers service, featuring the brightest stars of international jazz on a weekly basis.

The Arts / Jazz

By nature jazz in an open art form, always growing and exploring new edges to music making. By nature the church, too, is always listening anew to the voice of God and holding all people in a safe and creative environment in order to explore what it means to be people of God.

Truth is, the church has not always lived up to its end of the bargain. Saint Peter’s Church is committed to building an environment where all are welcomed and affirmed. In this way Saint Peter’s Church is very much what many call it: “the jazz church.”

Out of this, Jazz 4 All is a community jazz band with members of all abilities. Jazz 4 All is an improvisation workshop for singers and instrumentalists of all ages and experience levels. This multi-faith collective rehearses the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, and performs at the 1st service monthly. The group encourages expression, trust, friendship-building and musical knowledge through jazz studies. Interested in joining? Contact Ike.
