This Sunday, the fifteenth after Pentecost, we will solemnly commemorate the introduction of African slavery to our hemisphere. In late August 1619, a ship landed on the shores of Virginia, on a continent known by its current inhabitants as Turtle Island. This ship held humans that were kidnapped from their lands in Africa. Upon landing in the colony, these human beings, with broken hearts and bodies, were sold as enslaved people. The world still feels the effects of this enslavement today. To help us in this struggle, I’ve asked Imam Al-Hajj Talib 'Abdur-Rashid, The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood and Chairman, The U.S. Council of African-American Imams to preach at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.
