“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” That’s the way the first sentence of this Sunday’s second reading from Hebrews 13 is translated in the King James Version of the Bible. It’s a good way to conclude, and begin a Program Year, which is what we do on September 1 of every year. “Welcoming the stranger” is an ongoing call and ongoing challenge for us. Maybe in this Program Year, we can all learn to do this a bit better using as an example the behavior and instruction of Jesus about “table hospitality” in the Gospel for this Sunday, the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost.
